Building a beautiful home for our own is a big dream of us. After a lot of hopes, and collecting the necessary funds by no easy means, we get to the planning and construction. This is where most of us have to face things that we did not expect. Buying a proper land, designing the house the way you expect, or finding a good contractor is not an easy task. It is only fair, because we do not build houses every other day. So the only dream most of us have is to construct that one and only house we live in, properly. That is why it is important for all of us to be aware of some technicalities.
Today we are going to take a look at a book that is written to help tackle the above situation in a simple and well-explained manner. In Sri Lanka, of course, there are very few sources of valid information on this subject. Due to various misconceptions that spread on social media, many people are resorting to incorrect methods related to construction. Thus, what we are going to explore today will be shine some light to that problem.
Mr Rohitha Liyanage is a consultant with over 40 years of experience in the construction industry. After completing studies at Nalanda College – Colombo, he joins to the Institute of Technology, University of Moratuwa and gets a National Diploma in Technology in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa. He later entered the construction industry as a Construction Superintendent of the Engineering Corporation of Sri Lanka and gained decades of experience in the field, contributing to a number of local and foreign projects.
In the year 2018, he had to face an unexpected accident at one of his construction sites, which led him to have a rest for few months. Spending that time effectively and using the experience he had gained thus far, he thought about writing this book which could help more people to strengthen their knowledge on construction. Feeling grateful, he further states that the Director-General of the National Institute of Education, Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne, who encouraged him to write this handbook, deserves special respect in this regard.
Extending his contribution to the industry, In February 2020, the first edition of this book was made available free of charge. In July 2020, the second edition of the book was updated and launched.

The book is distributed with a DVD, and is available at any of the major bookstores. A PDF of the book and everything on DVD is available online for free. In a conversation with us, he humbly stated that his only satisfaction is to see every Sri Lankan who hopes to build a house use the book he has written as a handbook.
Let us quote a sentence in this book, which is presented with great restraint, that goes on to acknowledges his humility.
The methods described here may not be the only way and the very correct method. Engineers involved in this field have the potential to provide even better methods and solutions.
Counseling from someone who has the right knowledge will no doubt lead to the successful completion of your goal of building a house.Excerpt from the book “Guide to Building a House” by Rohitha Liyanage
